Introduction

Paris, France otherwise known as "the city of light" is a gorgeous place that most people can only dream of visiting. Today is your lucky day though because we can still visit, but through the wonders of technology.

It is one of the most popular cities in the world. It has a strong impact in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science and the arts. By learning a little bit about Paris and specifically the Eiffel tower I hope to better educate you on the importance of this very special city.

With that said... let us pack our bags and be on our way...

Where is it?

Paris is the capital of France. It is located in the north-bending arc of the Seine River which is in northern France. It includes two islands the Île Saint-Louis and the larger Île de la Cité, which form the oldest part of the city.

Paris is relatively flat for the most part with some hills.

Climate

From the map you can see that Paris doesn't have too extreme of weather conditions. This is because Paris has an oceanic climate that is affected by the North Atlantic Current. The yearly high temperature is around 15 degrees celsius or 59 degrees fahrenheit and the yearly low is around 7 degrees celsius and 45 degrees fahrenheit.

The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower was made in 1889 and named after it's designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel. It is the tallest building in Paris and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. More than 200,000,000 people have visited the Eiffel Tower since it was completed.

History of the Eiffel Tower

This picture shows the Eiffel Tower under construction in 1888. Gustave Eiffel originally planned on building the structure in Barcelona but the Barcelona city hall thought it didn't fit with the structure of their city. He then sent in his draft to those responsible for the Universal Exhibition in Paris where he would build the tower soon after. It opened on May 6th, 1889. It took three hundred workers to build the Eiffel Tower and only one man died in the process.

Shape of the Eiffel Tower

The shape of the Eiffel Tower was criticized by many people for being so bold and too artistic. They assumed it wasn't taken into consideration the engineering of the structure. However, Gustave Eiffel knew that since it was going to be the tallest structure in Paris (and at the time, the whole world) that it needed to be able to withstand all weather conditions. The shape and structure was decided by a mathematical equation involving wind resistance.

72 Names

Gustave Eiffel engraved 72 names into the Eiffel Tower. All of the names being French scientists, engineers and some other notable people that were recognized as helping Gustave Eiffel through the construction of the structure.
